Escape Bangalore! Explore Budikote Dam in a Day

Looking for a scenic getaway from the bustling city of Bangalore? Look no further than Budikote Dam, a hidden gem nestled approximately 60 kilometers away in the Kolar district. This destination offers not only a peaceful escape but also a delightful driving experience through lush green fields and well-maintained roads.

The beauty of Budikote Dam lies not just in the destination itself, but also in the journey.  Imagine cruising down smooth roads surrounded by vibrant green landscapes, the perfect opportunity to reconnect with nature.  The urge to pull over and capture the beauty with photos becomes irresistible, and every 30 minutes might feel necessary to truly soak it all in.

While navigating during a pandemic can be challenging, Budikote Dam provides a safe and accessible option for a weekend escape.  If you have your own car or bike, or can rent one, this destination is perfect for a one-day adventure.

Here's a detailed guide to plan your perfect trip:

The Route:

Thanks to Google Maps, you have three choices to reach Budikote Dam from HSR Layout, Bangalore: Hosur Road, Sarjapur Road, and Whitefield Road. The author recommends the Hosur Road route for its scenic beauty and well-maintained roads. They even suggest taking a different route on the return trip to experience the variety of landscapes Bangalore has to offer.

The Drive:

An early morning start is ideal,  around 6 am on a Saturday is recommended. This allows you to avoid traffic and truly enjoy the beauty of the unfolding landscape.  The Hosur Road route boasts the best scenic spots, so don't hesitate to stop and capture those postcard-worthy moments.

The drive itself is a breeze. The wide roads leading to Budikote Dam allow for comfortable car travel, and parking is readily available near the dam itself.

A Word of Caution:

Keep an eye out for monkeys along the way and near the dam, especially if you're carrying food.

Reaching the Dam:

Once you arrive at the dam, you have two options for reaching the top: a climb over a boulder or a set of stone steps. Choose the option that best suits your comfort level.

Enjoying the Scenery:

For the best experience, aim to reach the dam before noon to avoid the harsh afternoon sun.  Find a comfortable spot near the water, perhaps under the shade of a tree, and simply relax and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings.

The author describes finding a secluded spot on a boulder, spending a relaxing two hours with minimal crowds, allowing everyone to practice safe social distancing.

Food and Drinks:

For this trip, the author opted to pack their own food - biscuits, bananas, and cake - to avoid the risk of eating out during the pandemic.

Exploring Kolar:

If you have extra time, consider venturing beyond the dam and exploring the town of Kolar itself.  There are numerous temples, restaurants, and even a museum waiting to be discovered.  For architecture enthusiasts, the temples are sure to hold a particular charm.

The Return Journey:

The return trip can be a chance to explore a different route.  The Whitefield route, while less scenic, offers a smooth driving experience.  Leaving early allows you to avoid Bangalore traffic, and the monsoon weather can add a refreshing touch to the drive.

Back Home:

With a successful day trip under your belt, you can expect to be back home safe and sound by 5 pm, ready to reminisce about the refreshing escape from the city.
