Exploring the World: Solo vs Family Travel from a Woman's Perspective

Updated: Apr 3, 2024

Traveling with loved ones is a cherished experience, but we urge all women and girls to embark on a solo journey at least once for its profound beauty and life-altering impact. Whether traveling with family, alone, or in a group, Wander Woman believes that two activities are essential for personal growth: reading and traveling.

 Destination Dilemma

Traveling with family often involves considering various aspects, such as childcare facilities, accessibility to markets with essential services, good public amenities like hospitals and restaurants, and established hotels. This often leads to well-trodden destinations like Mussorie, Nainital, Shimla, Goa, Manali, Paris, London, Italy, and Dubai—popular vacation spots. On the other hand, solo travelers have the liberty to explore offbeat destinations that are unique, less frequented, closer to nature, such as Chitkul, Sangla, Gokarna, Ladakh, Chandratal, Jibhi, Kyrgyzstan, Bali, and Guatemala.

 Accommodation Alternatives

While luxury hotels with nightclubs, spas, multi-cuisine restaurants, and butler services are enticing, staying in an Airbnb, hostels, or a homestay with a local family offers a more immersive cultural experience. Discovering local cuisine, observing simplicity in daily life, or even sleeping in a wooden treehouse can be more memorable than staying in renowned hotels. Solo female travelers have the freedom to try these unique accommodations, whereas family trips might limit such experimental stays.

Activity Adventures

Family trips often prioritize city tours, visits to forts, and other landmark buildings, or theme parks, which are undoubtedly enjoyable. However, solo travelers have the opportunity to engage in high-adrenaline activities like skydiving, scuba diving, river rafting, trekking, and bungee jumping. These experiences might not align with family travel preferences, especially when considering who will look after the children while indulging in such activities.

In conclusion, both solo and family travel offer unique experiences, and each has its own set of advantages and limitations. Whether exploring new destinations, immersing in local cultures, or seeking adrenaline-pumping adventures, the choice between solo and family travel ultimately depends on individual preferences and the type of experience one seeks.

Financial Considerations

The saying "With facilities come high bills" rings true, doesn't it? Comparatively, family holidays often come with a heftier price tag. This is because you might opt for the convenience of a travel guide or taxi to navigate around and cater to the specific preferences of children, who often have particular cuisine choices and favored destinations. Conversely, when traveling solo, you have the flexibility to utilize more economical modes of transportation, such as public buses, shared rides, or even renting a scooty or two-wheeler. The financial burden tends to be lighter when traveling alone, allowing for more frequent trips within a reasonable budget.

Embrace Your Identity

When traveling with family, it's easy to slip into the roles of mother, daughter, sister, girlfriend, or wife, often prioritizing the needs and preferences of others over your own. Subconsciously, women may find themselves catering to the desires of their family members, sometimes at the expense of their own interests. However, this dynamic shifts when traveling with like-minded women or embarking on solo adventures. Freed from the obligations of familial roles, solo travelers can embrace their individuality, indulging in activities they genuinely enjoy and exercising the freedom to decline those that don't resonate with them.

 Nighttime Revelries

The constraints of family travel, particularly with children, often preclude indulging in late-night revelries and club hopping. However, solo travel offers the opportunity for adventurous souls to explore vibrant nightlife scenes, from the legendary all-night beach parties of Koh Phangan to globally renowned music festivals like Sunburn and Tomorrowland. Nonetheless, it's important to acknowledge the safety and security concerns associated with solo travel, especially for women. While the prospect of traveling alone may seem daunting, innovative women-only travel clubs have emerged to address these concerns, providing a supportive environment for solo female travelers.
